Get the most out of your LUMEBOX!

Hi friends!

Whether you're stepping into the radiant world of red light therapy (RLT) for the first time or you're a seasoned daily user, this kickstarter guide is your go-to source for all things LUMEBOX and the art of RLT.

Your LUMEBOX is versatile and powerful, empowering you to experience the full spectrum of benefits that RLT has to offer—from skin rejuvenation to alleviating soreness and inflammation.

First things first: check out this quick video to guide you through setting up your LUMEBOX and getting started.

Let's get started!

There are so many ways that LUMEBOX can be used, but here are the top ways that Dr. Viv uses hers.

Please note that everyone is different, so this is just for information only, not medical advice, and what works for Dr.Viv may not apply to you – we all need different amounts of light. Just like there’s no blanket ‘correct’ vitamin D supplement dosage for everyone, the same goes for Red Light Therapy.

Experiment, and if you have health issues or take medications, we suggest you work with your healthcare provider and experiment to find your ideal ‘doses’.

How Dr. Viv uses her LUMEBOX

I use my LUMEBOX multiple times a day. I usually start my mornings with a 5 minute meditation or breathwork session in front of my LUMEBOX – this helps to boost my mood and get me set up for the day ahead. I use it during the day if I experience soreness from workouts, need help with cuts/scrapes, and I always end the day with LUMEBOX in NIR mode at the back of my neck while I do a quick gratitude meditation – this help me relax and sleep soundly.

Skin Health

Red light therapy has transformed my skin. I have fewer breakouts, smoother, plumper skin with less wrinkles. Studies suggest the ideal energy dosage for skin is 3-10J/cm2, which can be achieved by how I use it below. Don’t over do it with skin – going over 10 minutes, or having it too close to your skin (closer than 5 inches away) is probably not ideal for skin rejuvenation.

I usually clean my face first, apply skincare products (vitamin C serum, hyaluronic acid, and facial oil), and then use my LUMEBOX. I apply sunscreen after LUMEBOX, and avoid using retinol based products at the same time as using red light therapy. If you use retinol, you can use it away from LUMEBOX (i.e. LUMEBOX in the morning, retinol at night), or on days when you don’t do LUMEBOX.

How I use it:

  • Time of day: First thing in the morning
  • Mode: Red
  • Length of treatment: 6-12 minutes
  • Distance: 6 inches away from face/décolletage
  • Frequency: every other day, or once a day, but giving 2 days of break per week.
  • Time it usually takes to see a difference: Around 5-6 weeks of consistent use.

Pain and Inflammation

If I have any joint or soft tissue soreness, I reach immediately for my LUMEBOX. If I’ve had an acute injury, I like to alternate LUMEBOX with an ice pack i.e. 1 full 12 minute cycle of LUMEBOX, followed by an ice pack on the sore area.

How I use it:

  • Time of day: any
  • Mode: NIR
  • Length of treatment: 1 full cycle
  • Distance: as close to the skin as possible
  • Frequency: as needed but not more than 3 times a day in the same spot. I let LUMEBOX run a full cycle on NIR mode, and then put an ice pack on the area right away for 10 minutes. Repeat if necessary.

Relaxation and sleep

For a lot of people, red light therapy has a calming, relaxing effect as red light is naturally predominant in our environment at sunset, and may be nature’s way to prepare us for sleep.

I find red light therapy at the back of my neck very relaxing, and entices me to sleep better. However, for some people, RLT can be energizing, so if that’s what you find is the case for you, skip the applications at night.

How I use it:

  • Time of day: 1-1.5 hours before bedtime.
  • Mode: NIR
  • Length of treatment: 6-12 minutes
  • Distance: Over the forehead or back of neck, close to skin
  • Frequency: every day or every other day.
  • Time it usually takes to see a difference: Right away for Dr. Viv

Tissue recovery

Whether it’s overtraining in the gym, too many Zoom calls, or a graze/cut on her arm, Dr. Viv uses her Lumebox® to ease soft tissue, reduce inflammation and aid recovery.

How I use it:

  • Time of day: any
  • Mode: NIR only if deep, or combined NIR+Red if superficial
  • Length of treatment: 12 minutes (sometimes she repeats this, but as mentioned in the video linked above, everyone responds to light differently, so adjust accordingly for yourself)
  • Distance: Close to the skin
  • Frequency: as needed, 1-2 cycles a day to the area.
