What Is Red Light Therapy?

Red Light Therapy (RLT) is the safe application of red and near-infrared light that have the ability to penetrate through the skin and aid in the production of cellular energy.

This process is also sometimes referred to as photobiomodulation, biostimulation, LED light therapy or low-level laser therapy (LLLT). 

Unlike sunlight, which contains UV rays that can cause skin damage, red light does not damage or burn our skin. In fact, research so far shows it may benefit our skin.  

RLT is increasingly adopted by doctors, dentists, dermatologists, and treatments may be applied at your doctor’s office, hospital, at-home, physical therapy centers and even dental offices! 

How Does RLT Work?

In essence, RLT helps our body work better. How does it do that?

By activating our mitochondria. Mitochondria is often referred to as the “Power Generators” of our cells. Think of them as the batteries that provide the energy for our cells to function. When our mitochondria don’t work, our cells cannot function.  Many things from our everyday lives can jam up our mitochondria, from inflammatory food to stress, and toxins like mold and pesticides.

Thankfully, it turns out our mitochondria has an affinity for light and has receivers which can absorb light, particularly in the red wavelength range. Multiple independent studies have shown that, when our mitochondria absorb red light, it is activated to trigger cascades of cellular processes that may then aid with:

SAMPLE CASE STUDY: As recently as June 2020 the University College London conducted an in-depth study of RLT and its effects on declining eyesight.

 The study concluded that staring into red light for three (3) minutes a day can significantly improve eyesight. Why is this interesting and exciting?

The basis of the science behind RLT is the absorption of light by the “power generators of our cells” as mentioned above; our mitochondria. Mitochondrial density is greatest in the retina’s photoreceptor cells of the eye, which require high energy demand. In humans, beginning around the age of 40, mitochondria start to decline, and thus our eyesight begins to weaken. As a result, the retina ages faster than any other organ in the body, with a 70% ATP reduction over life. ATP is the principal molecule for storing and transferring energy in cells

Why is this significant? If the basis for the success of RLT is mitochondrial impact and studies show significant improvements of the retina after treatment with RLT, for those who are 40 years or older…. the impact of this science demonstrates incredible promise to other areas of the human body

Mitochondria have specific light absorbance characteristics influencing their performance: longer wavelengths of red light spanning 650 to 1000nm are absorbed and improve mitochondrial performance to increase energy production

The UCL study showed that it is possible to significantly improve vision that has declined in aged individuals using simple brief exposures to red light wavelengths that recharge the energy system that has declined in the retina cells, rather like re-charging a battery. 

A note though that, while exciting, this is still experimental, and we do not advise you to stare into red light therapy devices without the guidance and approval of your healthcare provider. RLT devices vary in power and irradiance, and incorrect usage or the incorrect wavelengths may be damaging.

Unlike laser, which MAY damage the skin and needs to be operated by a trained professional, LED based light therapy is generally thought to be safe. 

This is because LED based RLT like LUMEBOX® does not emit any UV rays, which is the damaging part of the light spectrum. It also works without heating the skin, so there are no risks of burns when used as directed.

In fact, one of the main reasons red light therapy is rising in popularity among medical experts and consumers alike is its impeccable safety profile. That said, we still encourage you to consult with your healthcare provider in case you need to be careful or have a contraindication.
